Challenges & Trends: VMware Backup for Virtual Servers

VMware backup has become a priority for many IT departments as the adoption of VMware for server virtualization rises. In fact, 70% of adopters of virtualization surveyed by Enterprise Strategy Group say they are running VMware in their environments.

Why the increase? Because in the virtualization of server environments with VMware, organizations can reduce IT costs and simplify sever management.

What are the benefits of virtualized VMware environments where servers are consolidated?

  • Reduced number of backup licenses required to purchase and maintain
  • Fewer backup agents needed to upgrade and maintain
  • Improved backup and recovery with less management and less cost

Virtualization Challenges: VMware Backup and Recovery

Since server virtualization with VMware centralizes more of the processing power within a data center, it is critical that organizations adopt a VMware backup plan to protect these assets. Virtualization also increases the amount of data that needs to be stored and protected, so additional resources are required to process that increased capacity.

Other VMware backup challenges:

  • Increased storage capacity due to virtual machine image files and associated meta data that virtual machines can create and run
  • Increased size of storage volumes (LUNs) allocated to the physical servers
  • Increased backup volume requiring additional capacity

Virtual Tape Libraries (VTLs): Affordable Disk Storage for Reliable VMware Backup
Virtual Tape Libraries (VTLs) provide cost-effective, reliable disk storage that replaces expensive primary disk to accommodate the increase in processing required by virtualization. Companies can perform VMware backup directly to the VTL, eliminating the need to utilize primary storage resources, thus minimizing the impact on those primary systems and keeping storage costs under control.

Twenty-three percent of virtualization adopters surveyed by ESG report they are investing in disk-based systems like VTL for VMware backup. Why? VTLs deliver restore performance as fast as primary storage, but at the cost of secondary storage and they scale easily to accommodate the larger backup volumes associated with VMware. They are also highly flexible and work within existing backup solutions.

VTLs are gaining ground for VMware backup because they:

  • Eliminate the need to use expensive primary disk storage resources
  • Integrate easily into existing storage backup policies and processes
  • Deliver a consolidated, high-performance backup and recovery solution
