Exclusive multistream, multiplex capability

Only Sepaton can efficiently deduplicate large, multistreamed, multiplexed databases such as Oracle. By using the actual content of the backup to identify duplicate data at the byte level, Sepaton can find duplicates in separate parallel backup streams and across multiplexed data volumes.

Large enterprises are increasingly reliant on very large Oracle databases to run business critical operations. With Oracle databases growing exponentially, enterprises face the challenge of controlling capacity costs without slowing backup performance or exceeding backup windows. While multistreaming and multiplexing technologies helped reduce backup times significantly, deduplicating these environments remained highly inefficient and problematic.

First, Oracle databases store data in small segments of less than 8 KB that inline/hash- based deduplication technologies cannot process without bringing backup performance to a crawl or leaving a large volume of data un-deduplicated. Sepaton’s ContentAware™ byte differential deduplication finds every byte of duplicate data in Oracle databases without slowing backup or recovery performance. This powerful technology enables Sepaton to recapture capacity and control exponential Oracle data growth with unparalleled efficiency.

Second, inline, hash-based deduplication cannot efficiently deduplicate multistreamed, multiplexed Oracle backups. Their recommended settings of FILESPERSET=1 and MAXOPENFILES=1 and no more than 3 to 5 simultaneous backup streams actually stop the multiplexing of data across multiple streams. That may simplify deduplication, but it puts an unnecessary constraint on administrators. While EMC Data Domain tried to address this challenge with its support of Oracle Boost, few database administrators want to add third party software to their database servers or spend countless hours rescripting their policies to accommodate it. As a result, most large enterprises gave up on deduplication in favor of fast backups.

Sepaton, on the other hand, supports up to 16 simultaneous streams, allowing you to increase the FILESPERSET setting to multiplex the backup streams.
