Understand customers, then protect them

At SEPATON there is no mystery in our ability to deliver robust data protection platforms that are specifically designed for the needs of large enterprises. Our products blow the doors off of the competition because we regularly talk to our customers and hear precisely the challenges they face and require our help in overcoming.

In November 2011 we conducted a survey of this target market to gain a snapshot of exactly how day-to-day life in an enterprise data center was shaping up. By talking to the people at the sharp-end of our industry, we knew we could be certain that our technology would continue to address the individual pain-points that most commonly affect the data protection community we strive to help.

Our ‘British Data Protection Survey’ questioned senior UK storage managers with responsibility to protect at least 100 terabytes of critical data for their organizations. We heard professionals telling us that they felt undervalued, craved more support from senior management and were worried over whether they had the resources needed to meet business requirements.

Key information gained through the survey included:
• The greatest business challenges that data managers feel they need to overcome are: meeting backup windows through faster performance (70%); better protection for business-critical apps (52%); higher levels of data security (52%); and streamlining business processes (46%)
• A worrying 80% of enterprise data storage managers believe that senior management underestimates the importance of data protection, despite just 12% believing that is preventing them meeting business requirements
• Just 2% are concerned that a lack of funds is forcing them short of regulatory requirements, despite the same percentage saying that they found it easy to generate additional budget
• Experience topped the list of desirable skills in a data manager (76%), ahead of awareness of emerging technologies (62%), communications skills (54%) and attention to detail (54%)

Both backup and restore performance obviously remain significant issues for data protection managers working at UK’s largest enterprise businesses. But why not tell us your real-world experiences and opinions so that we can help you further with targeted products and services? The survey is actually an on-going review of the UK data protection market, which you can complete yourself online, here.
